How we compare

Bathymetry vendors don't model habitat. GIS suites don't bring marine coefficients. Consultancies cost as much as the lease itself. We sit between them - and the underlying engine is open to anyone who wants to install R and do it themselves.

Common questions

If the R packages are free, why pay for the SaaS?

Three reasons people pay anyway. (1) You don't want to install R + GDAL + the proprietary tolerance datasets locally. (2) You want the sonar-converter, the regulatory overlay packs, the climate projections, the compliance report generator, the audit trail. None of those ship with the open-source R packages. (3) Your organisation needs SSO, audit, SLA - we provide those at Enterprise tier. If none of the three apply, use the R packages.

Why buy Pay-per-use credits instead of just installing the R packages?

Two reasons. (1) The R packages on CRAN are only oystermapR and maerlmapR — the other 105+ species (all clam / mussel / coral / seagrass / macroalgae / sandeel etc.) are behind the paid tiers. If you're working on any of those, the R packages don't help. (2) Pay-per-use gives you the hosted UI, upload interface, cell-limited scoring, and Pack 1 regulatory overlays. Credits never expire, so it's a low-friction way to test methodology on a real dataset before committing to a subscription.

What are credits and how are they consumed?

Credits are a single currency across every activity. A minimum-floor run costs 10 credits (about $4). Suitability scoring is 1 credit per 250 cells × species. Env-fetch (CMEMS + WOA + GEBCO) adds 5 credits. CMIP6 climate projection adds 25% to the scoring cost. Sonar-file processing is 50 credits (Lowrance) to 200 credits (Kongsberg). The cost preview shows exact credit consumption before you commit to a run — no surprise bills. Enterprise gets a flat 20% discount on all activities.

How does seat counting work?

Each subscription tier includes a baseline seat count for the price shown. Add more seats mid-cycle and we pro-rate. A seat is a named user; each seat allows that user to sign in on 2–3 devices via the desktop app plus the SaaS portal. Focus includes 3 seats, Pro includes 5, Enterprise includes 25. Extra seats: +$99/mo (Pro), +$130/mo (Enterprise).

Do you offer academic, NGO, or government discounts?

Yes — typically 40–60% off Focus, Pro, and Enterprise tiers for accredited academic institutions, registered non-profits, and government bodies. Pay-per-use credit packs stay at list price (already the cheapest entry). Email [email protected] with your registration details.

When should I move from Pay-per-use to Focus?

When you notice you're spending $130+/month on credits, or when you need any of the features Pay-per-use excludes: env auto-fetch (no more manually curating CSVs of CMEMS data), PDF compliance reports (Pay-per-use only outputs CSV + GeoTIFF), project history, or team seats. The Cost Preview shown before every run nudges you at the natural graduation point — it'll say "this run: $99, Focus subscription: $129/mo unlimited."

How does this compare to hiring a consultant?

A marine siting consultancy will typically charge $30,000–250,000 for a single EIA-grade assessment. We're not a replacement for a consultant on a high-value lease — but we cut the consultant's screening, modelling, and report-drafting phases from weeks to hours, which often shrinks the consultancy engagement to validation + sign-off. If that's your workflow, our Services tier can also deliver the report end-to-end.

Can I run it on-premise?

On-premise deployment is negotiated per-org under Enterprise + Services. Useful if your data-residency requirements, network isolation, or security review process preclude hosted SaaS. Scoping call required — contact us with your environment constraints.

Is there a trial of Focus, Pro, or Enterprise?

No formal free trial — Pay-per-use IS the trial. Buy a $99 starter pack, run 5–20 real jobs, decide if the workflow suits you. For Enterprise we run a structured 30-day pilot with onboarding included, usually limited to two seats and a defined scope of work. Contact sales to start.
